June 1, 2010:

Gerry Fioriglio RN, BS recently spoke in Boston at the Philips Center for Health and Well-Being Think Tank. The Philips Center for Health and Well‐Being Think Tank looked at the role active ageing policies can play in the future and the barriers that currently exist to implementing them. How can seniors live independently in their own homes without worrying about being an ongoing burden on their family? How can quality of life – and quality of death - be ensured, with seniors being able to determine their own destiny? How can care systems best be organized around a rapidly ageing population - outside the hospital in the local community or within the home environment? How can an age‐friendly community be created to ensure social inclusion?

This was a global gathering of international professionals.  Gerry was asked to speak because of her expert knowledge and experience in Eldercare.  Gerry writes a C.A.R.E.S (Community, Advocacy, Resource, Education, & Support) newsletter and blog which provides valuable information to professionals, family members and caregivers on Ageing and Eldercare.  You can find more information about C.A.R.E.S. and Eldercare by going to www.thecaregiverblog.com.

May is Older American's Month. Started in 1963 there were only 17 million americans age 65 or older. Now there are over 37 million. Over 4.6 million of these individuals are still working either part time or full time. 10.5 % live in poverty. Pennslyvania has one of the highest number of older individuals with over 1.8 million.  This year Governor Rendell proclaimed May to be Older Pennsylvanian's Month.  In PA over 19 million dollars has been spent to help Older PA's citizens.  The fiancial resources come from the PA Lottery.  When you purchase a lottery ticket you are helping a Senior.  So next time you are passing a fellow older american, be kind, give a helping hand, and remember you will be there one day too.
